Job Search Workshops for Newcomers
Description: An introduction to job search process and techniques, information and assistance regarding resume and interview, information and assistance in the area of accreditation and licensing.
Participants who successfully complete all three days will receive a Certificate of Participation and a Reference Letter. Further assistance is available to successful participants.

Bridging for Engineering

Description: Modularized program to help Internationally-trained professionals access employment or licensing in Engineering
Format:

Evening and weekend courses delivered through SISO, Mohawk College and McMaster University, in partnership with Professional Engineers of Ontario and Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.

Qualifying Requirements:

Benchmark 7 through Canadian Language Benchmark Placement (CLBPT) Test.  International education and experience in engineering

Benefits: Understand Licensing/Registration process, improve skills to access engineering occupations, enhance English skills and understand specific aspects related to Canadian workplace culture.

Schedule: Most courses conducted on evening and weekends

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Program
Description: Higher level language training with a focus on workplace communication. Participants in this program benefit from workplace exposure through work placements, internships, job shadow or mentoring in the occupation or field of interest. This program is offered in partnership with Mohawk College.
Qualifying Requirements:

Minimum Requirements: Benchmark of 7 in the Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT). The CLBPT is administered, free of charge, through SISO Office.

Schedule: Continuous Assessment and Intake.  Monthly Start-up

Licensing & Accreditation
Description: Information regarding accreditation and licensing process for regulated professions and trades
Schedule: Last Tuesday of the month, 10:00 a.m-1:00 p.m.

Canadian Workplace: Requirements & Expectations
Description: Information regarding occupation requirements and employers’ expectations in Canada. The basics of workplace culture in Canada. How to successfully integrate and interact with your co-workers.

Portfolio Development
Description:
Portfolios are made up of items or work samples that demonstrate your skills, abilities and personal traits. Portfolios can be challenging and time-consuming to compile, and are usually prepared for interviews. Find out how and when you need a Portfolio, identify what you should include and get started with your own Portfolio.

Mentoring Program:

Description: Match internationally-educated professionals with mentors in their field
Format:

2-3 hour/week; schedule and goals jointly decided with the mentor

Qualifying Requirements:

Benchmark 7 through Canadian Language Benchmark Placement (CLBPT) Test.  International education/experience and strong desire to get back in the field of training/experience

Benefits: Understand requirements to practice your occupation in Canada, understand Licensing/Registration process, improve skills to access employment in your occupation, understand specific aspects related to Canadian workplace culture.

Youth Employment:

Description: Provide basic information regarding jobs, employment, careers and youth placement programs in Hamilton

Conversation Circle
Description: Practice and improve your English skills,through conversation on topic of interest, in an informal setting
Schedule: Every Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Citizenship Classes
Description: Preparation for Citizenship test. Courses start on first Tuesday of each month.

Description: Peer-guided classes for IMG preparing for MCQ and OSCE
MCC Preparation: Every Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Cultural Translation and Interpretation
Description: Information regarding the Cultural Translation and Interpreatation Process, information regarding policies, guidelines, forms, evaluation. Compulsory training for SISO translators and interpreters. Pre-requisite: Orientation for Volunteers.
