Cultural Interpretation & Translation Services (CITS)
WHAT IS CULTURAL INTERPRETATION?
It is the art of actively listening, recalling the message, and instantly making oral translation from one language to another, while at the same time using an awareness of cultural concepts and related backgrounds to facilitate full understanding between the parties in an interaction. This is achieved with the use of cultural interpreters who are trained and capable of providing this demanding service. Through this service they help to improve and maximize access to health, social, legal, educational, government and other essential services for cultural, racial, linguistic groups and short and long-term refugees and immigrants, by facilitating communication between service providers and clients through providing linguistic, cultural and ethnocultural bridging.
WHO ARE CULTURAL INTERPRETERS?
Cultural interpreters are capable of making oral translation from one language to another, using their linguistic skills and their awareness of cultural concepts and related background to interpret the personal, cultural and ethnocultural context of communication, to facilitate full understanding between the parties in an interaction.
Cultural interpreters are fully trained and provide a high level of professional services!
They receive training in areas such as: cross-cultural communication, anti-racism, cultural sensitivity, etc. They are also trained and qualified to provide interpretation in matters concerning health, legal issues, immigration, education, social services, shelters, police, spousal abuse, child protection, etc.

SISO provides cultural interpretation and translation services directly to immigrants and refugees who are registered clients as well as to a variety of other service providers, such as: health centres, social services, educational institutions, lawyers, shelters, etc.
Individuals and organizations interested in accessing cultural interpretation and translation services at SISO should contact the CITS Department directly, and inquire about the applicable fees. Cultural interpretation and translation services are available in over 60 languages. In order to make cultural interpretation services available and accessible to all individuals and organizations with limited budgets, SISO provides a flexible rate.
