Settlement Workers in Schools-Hamilton (SWISH)

Settlement Workers in Schools-Hamilton (SWISH) provides free governmental settlement services by focusing on the short-term needs of recently arrived newcomer families with children in schools. These services are provided in collaboration with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB).

SWISH develops strategies for mutual understanding and collaboration between newcomer families, school staff and students and provides information on, and referrals to:

  • Schools and education
  • English courses
  • Finding a job
  • Housing for your family
  • Canadian law
  • Health care
  • Immigration
  • Translation and interpretation services
  • Family related financial assistance
  • Advocacy
  • Other issues

SWISH Program aims at linking newcomer students and parents/guardians with the school resources and social/cultural services in the community, in order to facilitate settlement needs and foster student achievement.
