Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

LINC is a federally funded language training initiative. Classes are similar in nature to ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, but LINC classes can provide bus tickets and childminding to those who qualify.

SISO is the Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA) Centre for the Hamilton Region. The CLBA is a comprehensive assessment of English language skills in 3 separate areas: listening/speaking, reading and writing. The CLBA is a task-based assessment instrument used to determine a client's English language proficiency, usually for placement in a LINC class.

Clients wishing to join a LINC class must see an Assessor from SISO to determine eligibility, current language level and specific needs. We conduct the assessments at SISO and on-site at various LINC service providers throughout the Hamilton Region.

To be eligible for LINC classes, clients must be newcomers 17 years or over, Landed Immigrants or Convention Refugee or allowed to remain in Canada with government intent to grant permanent resident status.

To register for a LINC Assessment
call (905) 521-9917
and ask for an appointment with a LINC Assessor
