For Hamilton as a city of many diverse cultures, it presents a new community vision. For SISO it presents an opportunity to launch a community campaign to raise $5 million dollars to build a multiple family housing facility specifically to help new Refugee and Immigrant families – a resource that is desperately needed. This welcome house will help transition Refugees & Immigrants into our culture within a safe, mentoring, diverse cultural learning environment located in downtown Hamilton.
80% of the 400+ Refugees coming to Hamilton each year are children who are bright, active and excited about a new life in Canada. With proper learning, mentoring and encouragement they will prosper to become the future fabric of our city.
This house will truly be a home that will include temporary living quarters for several families at a time. When they first arrive in Hamilton, they will spend a few weeks at New Dawn to learn about our culture. SISO will then assist them to move to a permanent home and provide continued learning for employment.
The New Dawn house will also include common rooms such as a large kitchen to learn how to use basic appliances and prepare meals together, social sharing rooms, prayer rooms and indoor/outdoor play areas for children. This home will also include training and healthcare rooms for trained SISO staff to deliver on-site language, employment assistance and day-to-day living skills training. All this will ensure the newcomers a smoother transition into permanent housing within our Hamilton culture.
This will be the House that Hamilton builds
The beauty of living in Hamilton is that all of us moved here from somewhere else either recently or through relatives who immigrated to Hamilton over the past 150 years. Everyone who lives in Hamilton has the unique opportunity to truly experience a community rich in heritage and cultural diversity.
We encourage all Hamiltonians whether individuals or corporate businesses to give generously to this campaign, to help our new Refugees and Immigrants settle into a prosperous life in Hamilton. They will achieve success in building a life that will strengthen this community and learn to engage each other’s diverse culture for all of us to help one another.
