The Host Program

Every day, Canada welcomes newcomers from all over the world. But belonging is a feeling, and without friends and social interactions, newcomers can often feel isolated and alone.

We know that having friends and social connections is an important part of gaining this sense of belonging in a new country. The Host Program connects eligible newcomers to Hamilton, with Canadian Host Volunteers. The Host Program volunteers are "matched" with newcomers according to their interests, age, gender, etc. Sometimes matches are arranged as “mentorships”, based on having the same or similar professions. The Host Program can match newcomers with volunteers as individuals, couples, or as families.

This connection between a newcomer and a volunteer encourages the development of friendship, and a sense of belonging in our communities. Matches meet for a few hours a week, and together explore the fun ways of getting to know Hamilton and Canada better, and can partake in many activities together.
