SISO to Launch the Feasibility Study for a Civic Centre in Hamilton
Hamilton, February 16, 2005
Every year, an average of 3,000 immigrants and refugees come to Hamilton to make a new life. Fully 85 per cent of our city's growth is a direct result of immigration. Research suggests that within as few as five years, immigration will account for 100 per cent of our growth. Immigrants and refugees are future workers, customers, clients, students, practitioners, patients, entrepreneurs, employers, donors, and leaders.
These striking facts are at the heart of a bold initiative we would like to tell you about. The Hamilton Civic Resource Centre is an idea that has been talked about for years, and is now on the brink of becoming a reality. The advisory committee charged with the task of determining the feasibility of such a centre is pleased to invite you to a press conference on March 21, 2005 at LUINA STATION from 10.00 am -11.30 am to receive a copy of a recently completed feasibility study on the centre, and to learn more about this exciting project.
The Civic Centre concept already has the support of Settlement and Integration Services Organization of Hamilton, Strengthening Hamilton’s Community Initiative and other key stakeholders. The future Civic Centre would be located in a place easily accessible to newcomers, probably downtown. It would be an incorporated non-profit organization, and would be governed by a volunteer board of directors. It would offer social services not available elsewhere, assist with conflict transformation, act as an advocate for newcomers, be a clearing house for research and resource materials and be a training facility for cross and inter-cultural education, anti-racism and conflict transformation training.
In short, the Civic Centre is a bold and essential step toward making Hamilton the fully open, welcoming and inclusive community we all want it to be. Please join us to learn more about the Civic Centre, including the next steps toward turning this vital concept into reality.
